Maximize Veggie Growth. Reduce Waste. Become a Master Composter/Recycler.

Learn how to make your home zero waste, maximize recycling, run an effective compost pile and start your own worm bin when your take Skagit County Public Works Solid Waste Division’s annual eight-week Master Composter/Recycler training. Participants receive 30 hours of free training and materials and in turn give back 40 hours as waste reduction educators to the Skagit community. The new community garden is being built.  Work parties are underway to build the second community garden in Anacortes.  This garden will be a joint school garden and community garden and will be located at the Mt. Erie Elementary School.  The Mt. Erie School PTA is taking a lead role in moving this project forward.  We are excited to see this opportunity to integrate our community garden program with learning opportunities for Anacortes student.  If you're interested in helping make this dream a reality either by donating time or money to build the garden, please let us know via the "Contact Us" page of this site or donate using our convenient PayPal donation button.  If you are interested in applying for a plot at this new garden you can contact us for a copy of the application.  Please note that community gardeners at this location will not be allowed access to their plots during school hours, when school is in session.

Thank to everyone who supported our Spring Open House.  Our Mother's Day open house and plant sale was a big success and helped us raise funds toward building a second community garden in Anacortes.  We had a good turnout of local gardeners looking to get plants for their spring gardens.  We appreciate the help of Cub Scout Troop 4084, which helped us with the raffle and plant sale.  The scouts are gardening in the west perimeter of the garden this year and hope to move to a garden plot in the future when one becomes available.

Spring 2011 Open House May 8th from 1 PM to 3 PM at the 29th Street Community Garden. What better way to celebrate Mother's Day than bringing Mom, yourself or a friend to spend time with Mother Nature. We'll have refreshments, a raffle, a plant sale and other nice gift ideas. We'll also be collecting black plastic plant pots and trays, as well as those large plastic bags such as those for potting soil, bird seed.

This year we'll also be offering our new 2011 notecard sets for sale (4 cards for $5) - wait until you see these lovely cards. Here's a sample from the set.

The Armchair Book of Gardens - Anacortes Community Garden Advisory Committee Member Jane Billinghurst has a new book out--an illustrated anthology of writings about gardens. Look for this lovely and interesting book at Watermark Book Company.

Community Garden goes 'accessible' - A portion of the Community Garden at 29th Street now is more accessible to seniors and individuals with physical limitation.
